The Leicester City squad held a players-only meeting following their back-to-back defeats last week as they look to correct the club’s form and secure promotion.

City manager Enzo Maresca revealed on Friday that his squad got their heads together without him and his staff following the losses to relegation battlers Millwall and Plymouth. It was a pair of results that left City clinging onto a spot in the Championship’s automatic promotion places.

After the game, defender James Justin gave an honest assessment of the display, telling BBC Radio Leicester that “to put in a performance like that is really disappointing” and that the squad “definitely have to look at ourselves in the mirror”. It seems they have done just that.

Maresca said that squad-only meetings, while not a regular occurrence at City, do happen from time to time. He also agreed that the players needed to show more responsibility.

The manager said: “I know that they had a meeting a few days ago between themselves, between the players. To be honest, I don’t know if they had some more meetings (this season). I only know that some days ago they had a meeting. But probably they had some meetings during the season. I can confirm they had a meeting. It was not something special.

“This is something that came from the players. Like JJ said, this is the moment we need to look at ourselves in the mirror. It’s something that came from the players.

“I said straight after the Millwall and the Plymouth games that it’s just a matter of getting the job done and finishing in the right way. But also you cannot think that because we lost the last game, everything was wrong. For me it was not wrong. In this moment, they also need, as they said, to take a little bit of responsibility and finish the job.”

City need three wins from their final four matches to secure promotion. But if results go their way, they could be up by Tuesday evening. For that to happen, they need to beat West Brom on Saturday, hope Leeds lose to Middlesbrough on Monday night, and then defeat Southampton on Tuesday.
