Fans of hit ITV drama Liar had their wishes granted earlier this week when both Andrew Earlham was bumped off and a second series was officially confirmed.

But while the death of rapist Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd) might have always been planned, that wasn't necessarily the case for a second outing.

Speaking to Collider, Ioan admitted that series two was never really "an option" for the cast involved, and promised fans yet to catch the ending that there would be a definitive conclusion.

(We are inclined to disagree a little there, Ioan.)

"It was not intended to leave it open-ended, so that we would get a second season," he said. "It's got a beginning, middle and end. There was no option for us, under contract."

Conceding that things weren't that cut and dried with Liar, the actor added: "There's always an opportunity, with these shows, if it's a success... [to] revisit it.

"There's certainly a way of going back to our show."

Fortunately for writers – but not so much for fans – there's plenty of time to figure out where the story of Andrew and Joanne Froggatt's Laura goes next.

ITV confirmed to Digital Spy that production for Liar's second series won't kick off until January 2019, so we're afraid there's a while yet until we can find out who killed Andrew.

Liar airs on ITV.
