What did you miss?

Some viewers of Ant and Dec's big-money quiz show Limitless Win found themselves scratching their heads on Saturday night after a question about cats took just about everybody by surprise.

Husband and wife contestants Paul and Ellie were doing well until they were faced with the teaser: "According to Cats Protection, a one-year-old cat has reached what equivalent human age?" This caused a lot of confusion for viewers, and also for the audience — especially when the unexpected answer was revealed.

What, how, and why?

Paul and Ellie enlisted Ant and Dec to help them with a guess after they themselves had suggested five years, based on the common belief that "dog years" are human years multiplied by seven. Ant and Dec opted for nine years, pointing out the idea that cats have nine lives.

The presenters' answer was highlighted as being the closest, but everybody in the studio was stunned to see the correct answer revealed as 15. This meant the duo lost six lives.

On Twitter, fans were baffled as to how the answer could be so huge. One user did some maths and pointed out that "most cats I know live longer than dogs to about 15-20, so that would make it 300 human years".

Thankfully for those of us who were equally confused, there were some knowledgeable folk out there to explain how it all works. Cats and dogs age very quickly for the first few years of their life before slowing down considerably, so it's not a simple mathematical calculation in the way we think of "dog years".

You can also see more detail on this via the Cats Protection website, where they explain exactly how cat life stages map on to human development. Apparently, a six-year-old cat is roughly as mature as a 40-year-old human.

So we've all learned something about feline ageing this weekend, right after a question about how many claws a Monster Munch crisp has. This show really does teach us all sorts.

Paul and Ellie ended Saturday's episode with £75,000 in their bank and 25 lives remaining, having passed the £150,000 mark on the money ladder. They'll be back next week to continue their run.

Earlier in the show, best friends Terri and Jess chose to cash out with £20,000 in the bank after being thoroughly stumped by a question about the regulation length of string for competitive conkers.

Ant & Dec's Limitless Win airs on ITV1 on Saturdays at 8.45pm.
