'Line of Duty's Martin Compston hints seventh series already in discussion

Line Of Duty star Martin Compston has revealed the cast have already begun discussing a potential seventh series with writer Jed Mercurio.

The 38-year-old Scottish actor stars as DI Steve Arnott, alongside Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar, in the hit BBC crime drama which was believed to have come to an end last year when the identity of elusive crooked cop 'H' was finally revealed.

But Compston is quoted by The Sun saying: “We sat down with Jed recently.

"We’ve always taken a year or two between series. This is no different.

“We won’t do it for the sake of it. We’ll do it if there’s something to tell.”

The finale of the BBC police corruption series was watched by a record-breaking 12.8 million people.

But Compston felt obliged to address fans on Twitter after reaction to the identity of the corrupt police officer known as 'H' — who the AC-12 team have been hunting since the first series in 2012 — caused some disappointment when it was finally revealed to be minor character DCI Ian Buckells, played by Nigel Boyle.

He said: "Hey folks now the madness is slightly dying down, just want to thank everybody who reached out about last night and the series as a whole, we've truly been blown away by the reaction and love for the show we're proud of it. Fully understand it wasn't the 'urgent exit' type ending some anticipated but we appreciate you sticking with us."

While some viewers were unhappy with the ending of Line Of Duty others are eager for the BBC to make yet another series.

Compston added: "He said: “It’s amazing knowing people still want us back, especially when colleagues have become my best friends.

“They and the show really mean a lot to me.”

McClure, who stars as DI Kate Fleming, said recently: "We'd all go back.

"We adore working with each other, we adore working with... Jed's writing is phenomenal.

"We've been working together for over 10 years now and you know, the last series was incredible in terms of the response that we got but it was really quite tough to shoot because obviously it was within COVID so it would be lovely to go back and not end on that kind of way."
