THE local St. John's Ambulance Badger Sett recently held their youth celebration evening, and marked the contribution of two valued volunteers.
St John Ambulance (NI) youth programmes operate across Northern Ireland, enabling young people to learn first aid, build their confidence, and gain important life skills.
The celebration evening was a showcase of the many valued skills that young people, aged 5 to 10, have learned over the year, having achieved their first awards for first aid, safety and caring.
The occasion was also a chance to bid a fond farewell to Lady Mary Belmore, and Mrs. Eva Ewart, on their retirement from volunteering as Youth Team Volunteers within the local community.
Meeting once a week, being a Badger gives children a chance to learn what it means to be a good citizen, why community and care are so vital, important life skills, and the history of our amazing charity.
Leader, Emma Jamison, said the aim of St John's Ambulance Badger Sett is to "create a generation of active health citizens".
"Our youth programmes are an integrated part of our amazing charity," she said.
"The Badgers are the youngest people in St John Ambulance (NI), and our Badger Setts are all about fun, adventure, and learning first aid.
"Badgers take part in fun activities working towards their Super Badger Award. To gain the Super Badger Award, Badgers must complete nine of the themed Badger subjects.
"Our Badger programme covers a wide range of subjects and activities, from first aid to communication skills, to healthy living and being safe.
"All the subjects have been written by St John people with the aim of Badgers in mind and to support children through their learning and development journey."
Mrs. Jamison added that support within the local community is needed to keep the Badger Sett operational.
"Within your local community, we need more support to keep our Badger Sett open," she continued.
"If you are over 18, why not join us as a youth team volunteer?
"As a youth team volunteer, you'll be trained to provide our young people with both life skills and lifesaving skills, all while having fun!
You’ll be volunteering with Badgers (aged 5 to 10) or Cadets (aged 10 to 17) in this flexible volunteer role."
