Local man charged after attempting to smuggle tobacco into Huntsville Unit

Mar. 22—Local Correctional Officer Bryce Jefferson, 22, was caught attempting to smuggle items into the Huntsville Unit on Friday, March 8.

Investigators with the Office of the Inspector General arrested Jefferson at the Huntsville Unit for bringing contraband items onto a correctional facility.

According to Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Jefferson was interviewed by the investigators and admitted to bringing contraband into the facility. He removed a total of 12 cans of tobacco from his jacket and uniform pants.

Upon completion of the interview, investigators conducted a search of Jefferson's vehicle where they found additional smokeless cans of tobacco and wrappings of tobacco.

Officer Jefferson was arrested at the facility, by the Office of Inspector General. He was taken to Walker County Jail, where he was booked on charges of bribery and prohibited substances/items in a Correctional facility. For each charge, respectively, he received bonds of $15,000 and $7,500. He was released on those bonds Saturday, March 9.

Jefferson began working for TDCJ in January 2023 at the Huntsville Unit.

The agency takes a firm stance against any individuals who attempt to bring in or fund dangerous contraband. TDCJ works diligently to stop contraband and illegal drugs from entering its facilities. Individuals found smuggling contraband will be arrested and subject to prosecution.

While a student at Huntsville High School, Jefferson played a key role on the offensive line.

Overcoming a broken leg suffered during the 2018 season, Jefferson — who also competed in track and field — bounced back in a big way for a team that went three rounds deep in the playoffs. Among some of his answers in a player spotlight, he said his favorite high school memory was beating Marshall for the 2019 Bi-District Championship. He planned to work after graduation. He was also asked which coaches had the most influence on him.

He said Coach Carter and Coach Southern because they wanted me to succeed.
