London Underground bosses urged to prepare for station crowding as lockdown eases on Super Saturday

Passenger groups today called on Tube bosses to prepare for crowding at busy stations amid expectations that almost three in 10 Londoners will travel to pubs and restaurants this weekend.

London TravelWatch said the Central, Jubilee, District and Victoria lines were all set to get much busier – while there will be no Night Tube or Night Overground services.

London TravelWatch director Emma Gibson said: “This weekend many more lockdown restrictions will be eased and it looks like Londoners are even keener to enjoy their new freedoms than those elsewhere in the country.

“We know TfL have crowd control measures in place when stations get busy but we’re worried that they are not as prepared as they could be.”

Transport for London said there would be more Tubes than last weekend and an “enhanced” service on the Northern and Victoria lines.

One-way systems and queuing will be in use. All passengers will have to wear face coverings.

A TfL spokesman said: “There will be some times when there may be a slightly longer wait between trains on some lines.”
