Yahoo News Love Island viewers puzzled by election question as new series starts on ITV
The contestants will still be in the villa when the election takes place on July 4

Love Island fans were left pondering the same thing as the ITV show started – do the contestants vote and will they be told about the election results?
The latest instalment of the dating show – hosted by Maya Jama – started on Monday night (June 4) and is due to run for eight weeks. But with the election set for 4 July, some viewers have questioned what it means for the contestants.
Islanders looking for love on the show are tucked away from real life, with no TV, social media or phones and no contact with their loved ones. So fans aren't sure whether they will find out who the prime minister is when it happens, or whether they will be in the dark until they leave the villa.
What, how and why?
Several people posted messages on X about the issue during the launch show. "Do the Islanders even know there’s a general election next month - they’ve been in holding???" asked one.
Somebody else said: "How do Love Island contestants vote in the General Election? The season is 8 weeks long, the election is on 4 July. Postal votes?"
One fan commented: "I couldn’t be on Love Island, the fourth week I’d be like 'Can u tell me the election results?' That’s all I’d be thinking abt."
Another said: "I want something like this to happen at the Love Island villa on July 5th, Jama should appear on screen to announce the result of the election. It pains me to think that the eight finalists won't know who the new PM will be until July 29th and that's not right at all."
Someone joked: "Clever... Rishi Sunak going for the election date 4th of July whilst everyone is distracted by stuff #loveIsland #euros."
What else happened on Love Island?
The first episode also saw the contestants coupled up for the first time.
In a twist, the group had to choose which of the singles had the least and most girlfriend or boyfriend potential. They thought they were just undertaking a challenge but at the end Jama told them they had actually been putting themselves into couples. The person voted to have the least potential as a girlfriend was then coupled up with her male counterpart, and so on.
There was another twist at the end, when reality TV favourite Joey Essex was seen entering the villa. Jama announced that there was a surprise for the Islanders and The Only Way Is Essex star was then unveiled as a Bombshell.
