Love Island changed its rules to allow contestants to watch the Euros final – but they were left heartbroken by the result.

Usually, singles taking part in the ITV2 reality series have to agree to being cut off from the outside world for the duration of their stay, but on Sunday night producers decided the historic England vs Italy match was just too big to miss.

It was the first time the men's England football team had reached the final of a major tournament in 55 years and in a major break with the usual rules, the Love Island cast – who had no idea England had even reached the Euros final – were told they would get to watch the match in a special screening.

Host Laura Whitmore, who also presents spin-off show Love Island: Aftersun, showed the scenes of the Islanders cheering at the news England were in the final and that they would be allowed to watch them play.

But their elation turned to heartbreak when they saw Italy score the winning penalty.

The villa residents were told about the special screening by the traditional method of getting news on the show – they got a text.

Chloe Burrows read out: "Islanders, tonight you will be able to watch the England football team play Italy in the final of the European Championship! #ItsComingHome."

Sunday night's episode was delayed by an hour to make space in the schedule for viewers to watch both the Euros final and Love Island, but of course it overlapped as the match went to extra time and then penalties.

Love Island fans were also frustrated as they missed out on a dramatic recoupling with new boy Teddy Soares ready to choose a partner.

In the final moments of the episode, the tense moment was trailed for the next night's show as Teddy will choose between Faye Winter, Sharon Gaffka, Rachel Finni and Kaz Kamwi, all of whom he has enjoyed dates with.

One girl will be dumped after the recoupling and fans can tune in on Monday night to see who it will be.
