M6 'spy truck' catches Vauxhall Astra driver buying insurance on his phone

A 'spy truck' caught a motorist on the M6 buying insurance on his mobile phone. The siilver Vauxhall Astra driver was stopped by police as checks revealed that the car was showing as not being insured or taxed on the police national computer.

Warwickshire Police's Operational Patrol Unit (OPU) clocked that while the 'follow me' sign was illuminated on the police vehicle they saw that the driver was on his phone. "The driver thought it was acceptable to be on his phone buying temporary insurance cover," the team said.

The team said that the driver was reported to court for multiple offences. The OPU team were out in a special, unmarked HGV cab, dubbed a 'spy truck', on Monday to observe drivers on the M6 as part of 'Operation Vertebrae'.

An LGV truck carrying a number of porta-loos was stopped after officers saw the driver with both his hands off the steering wheel operating his mobile phone. When they stopped the truck, the driver was issued with a traffic offence report. The driver will receive 6 penalty points and £200 fine.

Also, a HGV driver from Spain was spotted on his phone. He stopped at Corley Services and ordered to pay £300 on the spot by a graduated fixed penalty for using a mobile phone while driving. He will also receive 6 points on his Spanish licence.
