You might think that working on an animation would be easy, given that you don't have to worry about anything other than your voice, but Maisie Williams found out that was not the case with Early Man.

The Game of Thrones star voices Goona in the brilliant new movie from British institution Aardman Animations, with her character helping to train Dug (Eddie Redmayne) and his tribe so that they stand a chance of winning a football match that will save their home.

She told Digital Spy that working on the movie was "much harder than I thought it would be" and it led to her learning a major issue about her voice.

"I rely on my facial expressions and my body language really heavily in filming, which I hadn't noticed until I started to deliver a line that they say needs to sound really empowering and really excited, and you try and say it and it just sounds flat," Williams recalled.

"I really felt like I was giving it my all and it just doesn't sound the same. It's a completely new skill that I've never used before, so it really did open my eyes to what my voice is doing when I'm acting. It's not a monotone voice, but there's something about it that just has a cold little edge to it.

"I want to do theatre, and I think it's something I'm going to get caught out on because you can do a lot with your body, but in terms of facial expressions for the audience, that's not something you see so much and you do rely a lot on your voice. At least I've had a little pre-warning."

Williams added that while she's proud of what she's done in the movie, there are "things I would do differently" if she gets another opportunity for an animation. And maybe that will come from any potential Early Man 2 if the first movie is a success.

"That would be fun, but it'd be, like, cricket. I learnt a lot on this and a lot of things I'll take with me, and apply when doing this again. I'd love to do more of it, with Aardman would be amazing," she enthused.

Early Man is released in UK cinemas on January 26, and opens in US cinemas on February 16.
