A makeup retailer which sells some of the most popular cosmetics brands could soon be coming to Exeter. It would be the latest in a string of new openings in the city centre.

A planning application has been submitted to Exeter City Council to alter the shopfront of the now-closed Menkind gift and gadget shop in the Princesshay shopping centre. The store closed on June 10.

Application forms and drawings show that Space NK could be the latest retailer to occupy the prominent shop unit. If plans are approved, the new store would be among more than 70 branches across the UK and the first to open in Devon.

Space NK was founded in 1991 by Nicky Kinnaird, with the first store opening in Covent Garden in 1993, selling smoothies, clothing from independent fashion labels and beauty products from "hard-to-find" brands. By the late 1990s, the store had shifted its focus solely onto beauty products.

There are now more than 70 branches across the UK and Ireland and a further 29 in the USA. They are known to stock more than 100 popular brands across stores and online, such as Charlotte Tilbury, Nars, Drunk Elephant, Glossier and Kiehl's.

On its website, Space NK says: "As the ultimate curator of over 100 of the most in-demand, highly innovative and boundary-pushing beauty brands, we're the go-to destination for worldwide beauty discovery.

"Founded in 1991, Space NK first opened its doors in Covent Garden in 1993, selling fresh smoothies, independent fashion labels and hard-to-find beauty treasures from emerging international brands such as Diptyque, By Terry and NARS. Word soon spread, and more stores offering the very best in beauty opened across the UK and Ireland. Today there are 72 stores and a further 29 in the US."
