A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of 100-year-old Zofija Kaczan, who died days after her neck was broken during a robbery.

Ms Kaczan suffered multiple serious injuries when she was attacked in the street in Derby on 28 May, and died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A 39-year-old man previously arrested for robbery has now been arrested for murder, Derbyshire Police confirmed.

He remains in police custody and is being questioned.

The attacker snuck up on Ms Kaczan, who survived Nazi capture in Poland during WWII, from behind and knocked her over.

He then grabbed in the attack, which took place close to the junction of St Chads Road and Empress Road in Normanton, Derby.

She was left lying on the ground with a fractured cheekbone and covered in blood.

Despite her injuries, Ms Kaczan managed to walk to the nearby St Maksymilian Kolbe Polish church.

Ms Kaczan’s bag, made of green fake leather with gold clasps, was found at the junction of Moore Street and Normanton Road.

A utility bill was found in the abandoned bag, and police are concerned she may have been carrying up to £1,000 in cash to pay the bill.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw a beige Seat Leon car, which was seen close to the scene of the mugging and found abandoned two days later.
