A man who tragically died after being struck by a lorry near Oban has been named locally as Douglas Macarthur.

Police raced to the A85 in Pennyfuir, around one mile outside of the town, at 1.55am today. Sadly Douglas, known as 'Doc', was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tributes have since poured in for the "much-loved Oban character" following the horror early hours crash.

Pal Kuba Maciaszek led tributes and wrote: "Rest easy Doc, blast some tunes up there and say hi to Lemmy. I'll miss you, buddy."

The Oban Tourist Board also reflected on the loss of a "huge" local character as they posted about the tragic incident on social media. They wrote: "To say Oban has lost a character would be an understatement, there is no joke, no satire here today.

"We were always happy to see him laughing at our posts, knowing he genuinely enjoyed them and him being himself always playing along for the craic. You rest easy."

Dozens of locals also added their memories of the much-loved local. Ann-Marie Sinclair wrote: "Such sad news, a much-loved Oban character."

Charlieanne Mcgrath said: "I will miss him winding me up every day. On Friday Me and Doc were laughing at the posts on here, he loved them! He will be very missed in Aulays."

Arlene Campbell said: "Horrific accident, just can't believe it. Such a decent guy." While Susannah Shellcock added: "My thoughts are with everyone involved such an awful thing to happen."

Cops probing the crash and Douglas' passing have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about it to get in touch.

Inspector Roy McCarney, from the Dumbarton Road Policing Unit, previously said: “We are working to establish the circumstances of the incident.

“Anyone with further information on the incident should call police on 101, quoting incident 0255 of June 27, 2024.”
