Man fighting for life after Waitrose car park cordoned off

A man is currently fighting for life after suffering a medical episode at the wheel of a car and crashing into railings.

Emergency services were called to Chapel Lane in Formby just before 5.05pm on Sunday, June 23. Police, ambulance and the fire service all attended the scene following reports of a crash.

An air ambulance also landed in the car park of Waitrose on Three Tuns Lane. A man, aged in his 40s, had suffered medical episode at the wheel of his white Honda car, resulting in the vehicle veering across a roundabout before crashing into railings.

In an update today, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the man remains in a critical condition in hospital. The front seat passenger, a woman in her 30s, sustained a leg injury and was also taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition is stable, police said.

A Merseyside fire and rescue service spokesman said: "Crews were alerted at 5.08pm and on scene shortly after. Two fire engines and the search and rescue team attended alongside Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).

"Crews arrived to find a road traffic collision involving one car. Merseyside Police managed traffic while four casualties received treatment from NWAS and firefighters worked to contain an oil spill.

"All four casualties were transported to hospital by NWAS and fire crews made the scene safe before handing over to Merseyside Police. Crews left the scene at 6.38pm."

Following the incident, Three Tuns Lane, School Lane, and the main village thoroughfare were all blocked off by police vehicles, and Sumner Road car park was also cordoned off. The roads has since reopened.
