Cyclist hospitalised after bike fall caused by RABBIT demands action

A man who was knocked off his bike after hitting a wild rabbit has spoken out about Reykjavik’s furry little problem.

Hlöðver Bernharður Jökulsson was hospitalised for a collapsed lung and several broken ribs, which he suffered when his road bike hit the long-eared critter on Friday.

Insisting that he was not even cycling very fast, Jökulsson wants something done about the city's furry menaces.

Rabbits are not native to Iceland, but have thrived there after descending from escaped pet bunnies. The rabbits then did what they do best and now the population is getting out of control.

In 2011, rabbits caused a three-car pile-up on a Reykjavik highway and plagued farmers by destroying hay stocks needed for feeding livestock.

“What needs to happen for the city to stand up and do something about this?,” Jökulsson asked from his hospital bed.

“I am quite sure that I am not the only one who has been thrown by one of these rabbits.

“I think the time has come to do something about this.”

In fact, there have been parliamentary discussions about removing all the rabbits from Iceland for the past two years.

For now, the furry menaces remain at large.
