Letter addressed to Prime Minister Theresa May delivered to man renting flat in Islington

A man who was maybe hoping for a few Christmas cards through the post was stunned when a letter addressed to the PRIME MINISTER landed on his doormat.

Sam Bass rents a basement flat in Islington, North London, and is definitely not the most powerful politician in the country – so he was a little confused by his delivery.

The 24-year-old was sifting through letters in the communal hallway of his flat at 10 Danbury Street when he found a letter marked for 10 Downing Street.

And while the postman responsible could be forgiven for confusing the scrawled Westminster address with the terraced townhouse in the north of the capital, the intended recipient ‘Ms Theresa May, PM’ is perfectly legible.

The letter, delivered by the Royal Mail from a north west Midlands address, was post-marked on November 19, but was only discovered this weekend.

Mr Bass revealed: “I’m in rented accommodation so we often get letters addressed to previous tenants.

“I decided to go through the post that had not been taken and was quite surprised to see one for Theresa May.

“I showed my housemates but it would not have been for them – I live with a ‘Marco’ and an ‘Emily’, neither of which look like ‘Theresa’.

“I can perhaps understand why the postman got the address mixed up because the handwriting is quite poor and they look similar.

“But the recipient’s name is unmistakable.

“And as far as I’m aware, the Prime Minister has never lived here.”

Mr Bass, originally from Taunton in Somerset, re-posted the letter on Sunday night.

He added: “I’m sure there’s probably nothing confidential inside. But it’s just as well it didn’t get delivered to somebody less honest.”

Royal Mail spokeswoman Sally Hopkins apologised for the mix up, adding: “Every item of mail is important to us and staff are being reminded to check mail thoroughly before delivery.”
