Manchester Airport train station has been evacuated following reports of a “suspicious package”.

A man was arrested at the scene as bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion "to ensure the package is safe."

Greater Manchester police issued a series of statements saying: “Officers are currently responding to reports of a suspicious package at Manchester Airport transport interchange.

“A man has been detained by police at the scene. A cordon is in place at Manchester Airport transport interchange and people are encouraged to follow directions from officers.

"As part of their assessment to ensure the package is safe, a controlled explosion took place. The cordon will remain in place as a precautionary measure as enquiries continue.

“Trams, trains and buses are currently suspended to and from the airport interchange. Thank you for your patience as we respond to this.”

Roads to and from the airport are also closed because police are not allowing vehicles into the airport's bus terminal, according to National Rail.

The disruption comes as the last Thomas Cook passenger flight landed at the airport following the tour operator’s collapse.
