Benjamin Mendy has undergone knee surgery, Manchester City have confirmed.

The left back, who was forced to withdraw from the France squad on Monday, travelled to Barcelona, where he was operated on by Dr Ramon Cugat on Wednesday night.

No timeframe has been put on his return.

In a statement City said: “Manchester City can confirm that Benjamin Mendy has undergone surgery on his left knee tonight.

“The Frenchman, who played the full 90 minutes in the weekend’s 3-1 win over rivals Manchester United, travelled to join up with his national team before withdrawing from the squad.

“The 24-year-old defender attended Dr. Cugat’s clinic in Barcelona where scans revealed that surgery was required.

“That surgery was conducted on Wednesday evening and everyone at Manchester City wishes Benjamin a speedy recovery.”

Mendy missed the majority of last season with knee ligament damage.

He was also out for over a month this term due to a bruised metatarsal.

It’s understood latest operation is to treat cartilage in his left knee and therefore not related to the ACL damage caused to his right knee last season.
