Manchester United set for pre-season squad boost with player available

Scott McTominay is now expected to figure on Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States after Scotland suffered another group stage tournament elimination.

Scotland finished bottom of Group A at the European Championship after scoring two goals and securing only one point across their three games against Germany, Switzerland and Hungary.

McTominay will be granted a minimum three-week break but is now expected to fly to Los Angeles with the rest of the United squad on July 24.

The 27-year-old is unlikely to participate in United's first pre-season friendly against Rosenborg in Trondheim in three weeks' time. United then face Rangers in Edinburgh on July 20.

Fifpro, the international players' union, recommends players have a three-week break away from football in the summer and two weeks of pre-season training. McTominay should be in contention for United's first tour match against Arsenal at the SoFi Stadium on July 27.

McTominay's availability is a boost for United manager Erik ten Hag after a career-best ten goals last season. The Scot also started in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

The United squad reports for pre-season training on July 8 and Ten Hag is set to take a strong squad to the States even though 11 players are on international duty at the Euros and the Copa America.

Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount were omitted from the England squad, Casemiro and Antony were overlooked for the Brazil squad, Victor Lindelof's Sweden failed to qualify for Euro 2024 and Tyrell Malacia is nearing a return from a year-long absence.

African duo Andre Onana and Amad are poised to travel and so could Aaron Wan-Bissaka if he has not secured a transfer within the next month. Lindelof is available for transfer as he is also about to enter the final year of his contract.

Willy Kambwala, Hannibal Mejbri and Donny van de Beek are the other contracted players available to Ten Hag for the tour. Facundo Pellistri, who was loaned to La Liga side Granada in January, is on Copa America duty with Uruguay.

Luke Shaw is yet to play for England at the Euros but Ten Hag said earlier this month the expectation was the left back would come into the side in the knockout stage. Shaw has not played since he sustained a hamstring injury against Luton Town on February 18.

Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen, Rasmus Hojlund, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Altay Bayindir have all appeared for their nations at the Euros. Portugal have already qualified for the last 16.

Lisandro Martinez started in Argentina's opening Copa victory over Canada on Friday while Alejandro Garnacho was an unused substitute.

The Euros and Copa finals both take place on July 14. Any United players involved in the final of either tournament would be scheduled to return for club duty the week beginning August 5.

United face City in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 10.
