Support for Leeds United’s fragile cause has arrived from a very familiar source ahead of Ipswich Town’s visit to Coventry City tonight. The Whites are currently second in the Championship, but the Suffolk outfit’s game in hand will push them into pole position with a draw or win.

The Sky Blues cannot make it into the play-offs and only have league position to play for in what is their penultimate home match of another memorable season under Mark Robins, who guided them to the FA Cup semi-final. The odds are stacked against the hosts, but if they can summon some impetus and motivation they can be a match for anyone in the division.

Daniel Farke’s side are hoping to win promotion to the top flight four years after Marcelo Bielsa’s United won the Championship title. Mateusz Klich, one of the lieutenants of that team, has thrown his weight behind a Coventry win tonight as he roots for Leeds, the defining club of his career.

Posting on X, Klich said: “All Coventry, aren’t we?” The 33-year-old currently plays for D.C. United in the Major League Soccer after leaving Elland Road for good 15 months ago.

Klich started all but one of the 46 league games that took Leeds to the second-tier title in 2019/20 and that one absence was alcohol-enforced, having celebrated promotion before the season had finished. By the time the Pole left Leeds he had amassed 194 appearances, ahead of the likes of Robert Snodgrass, Pablo Hernandez and Lee Chapman in the all-time rankings.
