As inevitable as night following day were the cries of panic among England supporters after the disappointing draw to Denmark on Thursday evening.

It was a turgid display from the Three Lions who played with the attacking intensity of their domestic descendants rather than the kings of the jungle moniker they have adopted. As the inquest lasted long into the night, the topic of conversation turned to who should have been on the plane instead.

One name who returned time and time again to the debate was Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. Even the 26-year-old's agent and brother Dwaine Maynard got in on the act, posting on social media: "It’s hard to sit and watch when you honestly believe your man could make the difference!"

Ultimately, Rashford knows the truth why he is not in Germany and that's because his form was not up to scratch this season. Now, some may argue that Gareth Southgate stood by Harry Maguire when his form dropped, but that was out of necessity considering defensive options were limited.

Unfortunately for Rashford, options on the wings are plentiful for England and he simply did not do enough for United this season to warrant a place in the squad. However, stressing this point is like preaching to the converted.

Rashford is already fully aware that this past season was not good enough considering the expectations he holds himself to. Knowing the character he is, the winger is unlikely to be sunning himself this summer and feeling hard done by.

He has already taken the positive decision to step back from social media during the pre-season break to focus on recovery and won't be seeing the noise that emanates after a negative England result. Like James Maddison and Jack Grealish, Rashford will know the only way to influence the national team in the future is to prove himself in the Premier League.

That hard work has already started and will step up another notch in a couple of weeks.
