While all eyes have been on the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the newest incarnation of The Doctor, we've still got Peter Capaldi's final episode to go before that.

As revealed in the series finale, David Bradley will be appearing in the Christmas special as the First Doctor, originally portrayed by William Hartnell back in 1963 – but that's not all.

Mark Gatiss, who has written multiple episodes and played a handful of roles in the show since 2005, has let slip he will appear in this year's Christmas special too.

In an interview with Empire at San Diego Comic-Con (about 11:30 in), Steven Moffat dropped the news that Gatiss would be in the special, which the writer and actor described as "a privilege, an honour and a thrill".

He didn't reveal any details of who his character would be, but said that the "very Christmassy" episode was a beautiful send-off to Peter Capaldi's Doctor.

Meanwhile, Capaldi himself said that Gatiss' character is "a resonant echo", whatever that means.

Previously Gatiss has played Professor Lazarus in series three (see above), a World War II pilot in series five and six, and a being called Gantok in the 2015 Christmas special.

Among the multiple episodes he has penned, he also wrote the drama An Adventure in Space and Time, which focused on the making of the original Doctor Who series and had Bradley playing Hartnell playing the First Doctor.

It was also announced this week that he would be remaking a classic British film in audio form alongside his League of Gentleman co-star Reece Shearsmith.
