Southampton have agreed a long-term deal with manager Mark Hughes after the Welshman saved the club from relegation.

The Welshman, sacked by Stoke earlier in the campaign, replaced former manager Mauricio Pellegrino on the south coast with eight games to go in the Premier League season.

Hughes and his coaching staff of Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki have all agreed three-year-deals at St. Mary’s Stadium, having originally signed short-term contracts until the end of the season in March.

The Saints escaped relegation with wins against Bournemouth and Swansea in a dramatic final few weeks of the season.

“Mark, Eddie and I are thrilled to have signed long-term contracts with the club,” Hughes said.

“It was the only option we considered, having spent the last eight weeks with the club.

“Now it is vital that we take the unbelievable support we received from the fans during the last few games into next season. The staff and the players will work hard every day to deliver the success this club deserves, and with everyone pulling together we will achieve our goals.”
