A sports reporter for an Iowa TV station has gone viral in the wake of a compilation of clips of his grumpy presenting segments from outside in a blizzard.

Mark Woodley of KWWL-TV was drafted in to cover the extreme weather conditions in the city of Waterloo and, based on the video he shared on Twitter this week, he wasn't pleased about it.

The clip was then passed on by numerous famous faces including comedy filmmaker Judd Apatow and NFL sportscaster Rich Eisen.

At the time of writing, more than three million people have watched the clip in the less than 24 hours since it was posted.

Temperatures in parts of Waterloo dropped as low as -10F (-23C) on Thursday, so few could blame Woodley for being so grumpy — especially as he was not accustomed to the early hour of the broadcast.

In the clip, he said: "I normally do sports. Everything is cancelled here for the next couple of days, so what better time to ask the sports guy to come in about five hours earlier than he would normally wake up and go stand out in the wind and the snow and the cold and tell other people not to do the same?"

During one of the segments in the montage, Woodley told audiences to "tune in for the next couple of hours to watch me progressively get crankier and crankier".

In one of the final clips, Woodley asks with exasperation whether he can "go back to my regular job" after hours of reporting in the adverse weather.

He said: "I'm pretty sure that you guys added an extra hour to this show just because somebody likes torturing me.

"Compared to two and a half hours ago, it is just getting colder and colder."

Woodley's work has been extensively praised online, with Apatow calling him a "legend" and Eisen writing "well played" in a tweet sharing the video.
