Married At First Sight Australia returned for series nine last night and wasted no time in kicking off marital tensions, as one groom labelled his wife "a psycho" at their wedding reception.

Sparks flew between Brent, 33, and Tamara, 29, when they met for the first time at their wedding on the E4 dating show - but unfortunately, the sparks did not appear to be of the romantic sort.

Demanding Tamara had told how she expected an attractive, muscly, successful and ambitious groom and worried that he wouldn't live up to her high standards, saying before the wedding: "I think my groom will like what he sees but my biggest fear is that I won't like him and we won't get along."

But although first impressions were good, Tamara did not try to hide her disappointment when Brent said that he worked in a Sydney nightclub, and she later picked him up on his misuse of cutlery during the reception.

Groom Brent told the cameras: "I think tonight is going really well, and by well, I mean my wife is a psychopath."

Earlier in the episode, Brent explained how he was just starting to regain his confidence after going through the toughest time of his life.

He had run a hugely successful hospitality and photography business in Dubai, raking in huge sums and showing off snaps of his enviable lifestyle and celebrity clients who included Will Smith.

But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, Brent had lost everything and been forced to return home to Sydney, where he was trying to rebuild his life.

If Brent was hoping for an understanding and sensitive bride, it doesn't look as though he has got his wish with Tamara, who labelled him "average" after hearing about his current job and added: "I don't do average".

However, while the bride and groom may not have hit it off, viewers had high hopes for the bridesmaid and best man who were the only guests at the wedding.

One person tweeted: "Tamara and Brett may be a car crash but don't you think their witnesses make a great couple?"

Someone else agreed: "Plot twist Brent's best man and Tamara's maid of honour get married instead."

The opening episode also featured Selin and Anthony's wedding which went much more smoothly, with an initial attraction, families who got on well, and the couple bonding over both being single parents.

Married At First Sight Australia continues tonight at 7.30pm on E4.
