We've got some bad news for fans of middle-aged grouchiness, because BBC One sitcom Warren has been cancelled after just one series.

Starring Martin Clunes as an incredibly unpleasant driving instructor, Warren didn't get off to a great start earlier this year when fans labelled its opening episode "tripe" and "bloody painful".

In other words, Warren never really managed to get out of first gear.

Announcing the news via social media, series creator Jimmy Donny Cosgrove wrote: "Today I bought the DVD of my very own TV series #Warren. Sadly, the BBC never bought the second series of my very own TV series #Warren but thems the breaks.

"Thanks to everyone who watched, supported, and encouraged. Hopefully this isn't the end, but just the beginning. JDC x".

Various fans of the screenwriter came out of the woodwork to respond with supportive messages, though, as one individual replied: "Best thing on BBC in a while! Gutted that's it!"

Another of Cosgrove's followers declared: "That's such a shame Jimmy, it was a brilliant series - much better and funnier than the over-hyped show which followed it. I'll definitely be buying the DVD, and I really hope we see some more of your work soon because I love your humour! x".

This news will perhaps be a shock to the system for Clunes, who prior to the show's premiere dubbed it too funny to turn down.
