Mary Poppins Returns needed "so badly" says director
With Mary Poppins Returns set for release next month, director Rob Marshall believes it's a film we truly need in these turbulant times.
A Quiet Place actress Emily Blunt is taking on the magical nanny this time around, in a story which revisits the Banks family.
The impressive cast also includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Spectre's Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Meryl Streep and the magnificent Dick van Dyke, who's returning to the franchise as a new character.
Chatting to Entertainment Weekly, Marshall discussed how he decided last year to place the sequel in London's economic depression, whilst also reflecting on Poppins as a beacon of hope.
"If I felt that way then, I feel it twice, 19 times as much now. I just feel like this is something we need so badly," he said.
"We live in such a fragile time, that we need this film. I certainly felt that I needed it. I needed to turn off the news and be launched into a magical world where wondrous things can happen still, and there's hope."
Meanwhile, Blunt recently admitted that she finds the iconic movie nanny to be pretty "creepy", despite her playing her in the upcoming re-imagining.
Luckily for fans, she also elaborated: "But I loved doing it, it was just the best. It really was awesome."
Mary Poppins Returns will be opening on December 19 in the US cinemas and on December 21 in the UK.
