Gary Lineker has hit out at what he has branded a 'strange' remark by England manager Gareth Southgate, as he and Match of the Day colleague Alan Shearer delivered a damning verdict on the Denmark match.

The England team were booed off the pitch by fans inside the stadium in Frankfurt on Thursday, as they drew 1-1 with Denmark, in a game that they and many fans will want to forget. After taking the lead through captain Harry Kane, England led their one goal advantage slip before the break, before delivering a dire and lacklustre performance in the second half.

While the Three Lions still have four points out of a possible six and are top of their Euros group,. both matches so far have seen the team who made the final three years ago well below par, meaning questions are being asked of Southgate, his team selection and his tactics.

Away from the BBC studio, ex England strikers and Match of the Day stars Gary and Alan laid into England, as well as turning the heat on Southgate on their podcast The Rest is Football, with them homing in a quote from the England boss that the team "don't have a natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips."

First to call him out, Alan remarked: "That is very worrying to me. I didn't understand his comment at all" before Gary responded: "That was very strange. I mean, pressure, you know and inside he'll be sick."

Having the last word, Alan very matter of factly added: "That performance and that team won't win this competition unless they improve massively."
