Matt Lucas has hit out at the LGB Alliance, saying that the group doesn’t represent him as a gay man.

The political group and registered charity aims to protect the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people by separating issues of sexuality from the “damaging theory of gender identity”.

However, the LGB Alliance has been called a “divisive and polarising anti-trans campaign group” by a number of LGBT+ charities.

The Conservative party faced criticism this week after reports emerged claiming that they would be hosting a stand from the group at their forthcoming party conference.

In a tweet shared on Thursday (30 September), Lucas hit out at the LGB Alliance, calling them an “anti-trans group”.

“The LGB Alliance is an anti-trans group,” he wrote. “That’s all it is. It doesn’t represent me or any gay people I care to know.”

The Independent has approached the LGB Alliance for comment.

On their website, the LGB Alliance says that comments the group is transphobic are a “myth”.

“The issues and priorities for people who are attracted to the same sex (homosexual/bisexual) are different from those of transgender people, and so, with a number of organisations focused on trans people and trans issues, our focus is on lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people and their issues,” they write.

Lucas has faced criticism himself in the past for the use of transphobic stereotypes in Little Britain sketches.

The Great British Bake Off host has since apologised for the inclusion of the character, as well as the show’s use of blackface and other outdated stereotypes.

“If I could go back and do Little Britain again, I wouldn’t make those jokes about transvestites,” he said in 2017. “I wouldn’t play black characters. Basically, I wouldn’t make that show now. It would upset people.”
