Matthew Kelly Accused Of 'Casual Racism' On Saturday Kitchen
Eek, Matthew Kelly left Saturday Kitchen viewers everywhere absolutely mortified after he was “casually racist” to Japanese chef Jun Tanaka during a live interview on the show.
We mean, the second-hand embarrassment is definitely real.
The former Stars In Their Eyes presenter made the assumption that Jun was in the studio to cook Japanese food, however, the chef is actually a French-Mediterranean specialist and was born in New York and raised in Britain.
Speaking to the esteemed chef, Matthew said: “I always associate Japanese cooking with very clean food… in fact, I’d say if there was a choice between any restaurant, I’d always go to the Japanese.”
Erm… Awkward…
However, Jun took it in his stride and laughed: “This one isn’t Japanese. I get that a lot… Everyone thinks I cook Japanese food and my restaurant is Japanese, but it isn’t, it’s French-Mediterranean.”
Taking to Twitter, fans weren’t going to let Matthew forget his blunder in a hurry as viewers accused the host of “casual racism”:

Matthew Kelly will need to remove his foot from his mouth before trying Jun’s food. #SaturdayKitchen

Matthew apologised for the mistake but we reckon fans of the show won’t be forgetting this one in a hurry.
