Madeleine McCann Facebook page warns against 'nasty comments'

Moderators behind the official Madeleine McCann Facebook page have put out a post warning against “nasty comments” following Netflix’s documentary on the case.

The post reads, “As a reminder, all posts are hidden until they are approved. If you make a nasty comment, your post will be deleted and you will be banned.”

“This is a place of hope. We will not tolerate negativity towards Madeleine, her family or anyone else on this page. “

This month, Netflix released an eight-part documentary called The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The series interviewed a range of people involved in the case, but received mixed reception and was accused of attempting to profit off of the growing interest in the True Crime genre.

Both parents refused to participate in the documentary saying in a statement they believed the documentary could hinder the investigation.

“We are aware that Netflix are planning to screen a documentary in March 2019 about Madeleine’s disappearance,” they told the BBC.

“The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate.

“We did not see – and still do not see – how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it.”

Madeleine’s disappearance from a hotel in Portugal in May 2007 sparked an international investigation that continues to this day. At one point, the girl’s parents were under suspicion from authorities, although this was later lifted, their case, and Madeleine’s parents, remain popular targets for conspiracy theorists.

The official Facebook page for the search has posted numerous posts following the release of the documentary asking for empathy. Followers and supporters have commented on these in solidarity.
