Cyclist fighting for life after being attacked by gang with a hammer

A cyclist is fighting for life after being attacked by a gang armed with a hammer in Merseyside, police said.

The victim, a 22-year-old man, was set upon by the armed thugs who reportedly got out of a small grey car in Victoria Road West in Crosby, Merseyside and subjected him to a vicious assault.

The brutal attack took place at about 10.45pm on Saturday.

A number of passers-by came to the cyclist’s aid ane he was taken to hospital shortly afterwards.

He is now said to be in critical condition having suffered “significant injuries”.

One of the attackers was described as in his 40s or 50s, of stocky build and with grey hair.

The others were described as being teenagers.

Police said an investigation was underway and house-to-house enquiries were being carried out in the local area.

Detective Chief Inspector Siobhan Gainer told the Liverpool Echo: "This was a serious and violent assault which has left a man with significant injuries and I am determined to find the people responsible.

He also told the BBC: "I would ask anyone who saw the cyclist or the grey car, which was possibly a Volkswagen Golf, in the Crosby area, last night to contact us.

"A number of people in the area came to the cyclist's assistance following the assault.

“But I would also like to speak to anyone who was driving past who may have seen or captured something significant on their dashcam footage."

People came to the cyclist's aid before he was taken to hospital.
