Met Office forecast for Wales predicts when heavy rain is set to replace sun

The mild and mostly dry start to June is set to be disrupted with "heavy rain" on the way according to the Met Office forecast. Weather maps from the forecaster show the end of the week is likely to be a complete washout with up to 16mm of rain per hour falling in parts of the country.

As it stands a stormy front moving eastbound from Ireland will bring downpours to Wales on Thursday, June 13, overnight into Friday morning. Most parts of the country will see around 1-2 mm of rain falling per hour but some could be drenched in as much as 8-16mm, especially on higher ground.

As the weekend rolls in Friday will see scattered showers across the whole of the country but it will still feel like a welcome respite from the lashings expected on Thursday. Much of the showers will be contained to higher ground although clusters around Swansea appear to be expecting heavier rainfall than other areas. Currently the Met Office forecast for Wales for Wednesday, June 12, to Friday, June 14 reads: "Largely dry with sunny periods on Wednesday. Quickly turning wet and windy on Thursday with heavy rain and coastal gales possible. Sunny spells and scattered heavy showers on Friday."

As well as the rain temperatures are also slightly below average for the time of year and dipping to just 3°C overnight. And unfortunately it looks as though the unsettled weather is here to stay with the Met Office forecasting more showers as the month goes on with some thunder accompanying them.

The UK Met Office forecast for Saturday, June 15 to Monday, June 24 says: "During the first weekend of this period a mixture of sunny spells and showers is likely across the majority of the UK. Some of the showers are expected to be heavy and could be accompanied by thunder.

"Temperatures will probably be slightly below normal for the time of year. Into the following week similar conditions are most probable at first with further showers. Later in the week and through the weekend, confidence in the dominant type of weather pattern is low."

However towards the end of the month the skies are expected to get slightly sunnier with the forecast continuing: "Fairly typical conditions for the UK are most probable with a mixture of weather types. This means some spells of drier, sunny weather but also some showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures will most likely be close to or slightly below average."
