Temperatures are set to rise in Gloucestershire to 25C according to the latest Met Office weather forecasts. The mercury is set to peak in the mid-20s from Sunday (June 23) through to Wednesday, June 26.

It will come as a welcome change for many after cold, windy and wet weather so far in June. These cooler days were due to northerly winds from the Arctic, but it's warmer southerly winds that are set to mark a marked difference.

But all that is finally changing with today (Thursday, June 20) forecast to hit 23C in Gloucestershire with 22C on Friday, 21C on Saturday, 24C on Sunday and 25C on Monday and Tuesday, with Wednesday 24C. Although the mercury is rising, there will also be some cloud around so don't expect unbroken days of clear blue skies.

The term 'heatwave' is often thrown around, but it has a very specific definition in the UK. According to the Met Office, a heatwave is characterised as an extended period of unusually high temperatures for a particular location and time of year.

Each county in the UK has a specific temperature threshold set by the Met Office. If the daily maximum temperature meets or exceeds this value for three consecutive days, it's officially classified as a heatwave.

These threshold values range from 28C in London to 25C in northern England, Devon and Cornwall, Scotland, Northern Ireland and most of Wales. Earlier this year, Chertsey in Surrey nearly hit its 28C threshold when temperatures climbed to a sizzling 27.5C - the highest temperature recorded in 2024 so far.

In it's forecast for late June and into July, the Met Office addresses the chance of increasing temperatures in the UK. It says weather could turn increasingly warm next week and this change could continue into July with temperatures becoming 'increasingly hot'.

Met Office West Country weather forecast

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Early cloud and rain will break up to give a mix of sunny spells and a few showers on Saturday. Mostly dry, with bright spells Sunday and Monday. Feeling warmer.

Met Office long-range forecast

Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, July 3

Predominantly fine and settled through the period and for much of the country turning much warmer than we have seen in recent weeks. At first some thicker cloud could bring some outbreaks of mostly light rain, this mainly affecting northwestern areas. However for most it will be dry throughout, and likely to turn increasingly warm as we move into next week.

There is a chance that this could persist for much of the rest of the period, turning increasingly hot, however by the latter part of next week we see a large range of outcomes, some of which allow for a return of temperatures closer to average. However the trend toward much warmer conditions continuing through next week is preferred.
