Met Office verdict on how long 27C scorcher will last in Lancashire

Lancashire is currently in basking in glorious sunshine and hot weather with temperatures hitting 27C.

The UK has recorded its hottest day of the year so far this year with mercury levels tipping past the 30C mark in the south on Tuesday. It comes as most of England is under yellow heat health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

It will remain in force in eight regions, including the North West, until 5pm on Thursday (June 27). It has sparked health concerns for older people more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Some parts of the country are likely to record a heatwave this week, which is when the temperature exceeds a certain threshold for three days in a row. This threshold varies depending on where you live, but in Lancashire it is 25C.

According to the Met Office, temperatures will hit highs of 27C in the region today (June 27) with high UV levels and a very high pollen forecast. However the summer blast is not expected to last, with temperatures plummeting to 18C on Thursday and then 16C on Friday.

A cold front will sweep in bring a band of cloud. There is also a chance of isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms developing in parts of the UK, with fresher conditions expected by Friday.

Andrea Bishop, a Met Office spokeswoman, said: "“Wednesday is a very warm day for many and we’re going to have top temperatures of 31C. We then transition to fresher conditions looking very likely through Thursday as a weakening band of cloud and showery rain runs east, south-east, across the country through the day.

"Although it could still be very warm ahead of this, for example in the east or south east of England."

Heat exhaustion, heatstroke and dehydration are the main risks posed by heatwaves and hot weather. NHS guidance says older people, especially those over 75 and female, are most vulnerable to heat-related illness, as well as people with serious or long-term illnesses, and very young children.
