While it has suddenly been feeling like summer after Wales experienced its hottest day of the year, the forecast looks set to shift again according to the Met Office with temperatures expected to drop by 10°C over the course of a few days.

Temperatures reached 27°C in Usk, Monmouthshire, on Tuesday with highs of 30°C recorded in Chertsey, south England * making it the hottest day of the year since September 10. Temperatures need to be over 25°C for three days in a row for a heatwave to be called in Wales and the weather this week certainly looks on track to hit this.

However, the sunshine won't be long lasting with a "change in the weather" bringing "a cold front" from Thursday. Mark Sidaway, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Although we are expecting to see some very warm temperatures this week, it may not be the wall-to-wall sunshine and blue skies people are expecting as there is likely to be some cloud around in places.

“Some areas, mainly central and eastern England, will see temperatures which exceed the heatwave criteria. To be officially recognised as a ‘heatwave’ though, the temperature must be reached for three consecutive days. Although we are looking to enjoy some nice warm temperatures, the weather this week does not look particularly exceptional or extreme.”

On the upcoming few days, the Met Office said that while it will still be warm, it will be cooler than it has been in recent days and there is also a chance for heavy showers and thunderstorms. Join our WhatsApp news community here for the latest breaking news.

In an update they said: "A transition to fresher conditions is looking likely through Thursday, with a cold front bringing a band of cloud and showery rain running east/southeast across the country. "It will still feel very warm ahead of this, with the southeast hanging on to the warmth and sunshine. There is also a chance of isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms developing during the afternoon.

"By Friday, fresher conditions are likely to be established across all areas, with temperatures near or a little below average in the northwest, and near or a little above average in the southeast. There will also be plenty of dry weather with sunny spells, although showers and breezy conditions most likely in the north/northwest."

The Met Office forecast for Wales:

Thursday, June 27:

Any lingering light rain and drizzle soon clearing to the east, to leave a bright and breezy day with a fresher feel and perhaps the odd shower later on. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Bright and breezy through Friday with the odd shower. Rain and drizzle arriving on Saturday, but turning drier and brighter again for Sunday. Temperatures generally near average.
