Scotland is finally in store for a bit of summer in the upcoming days, the Met Office reports.

The summer solstice marked the official start of the season yesterday, though the weather hasn't seemed to follow. Fortunately, weather experts have indicated when Scots can finally bask in the sun.

A warm spell is sweeping in across the UK and forecasters say higher temperatures are arriving early next week. The forecast shows much of the UK will be treated to a jump in temperatures that will reach the mid-20s by the middle of next week.

Could it be a heatwave? The Met Office reports that parts of England could approach heatwave conditions, but the weather in Scotland doesn't indicate it will.

Even so, it will bring the nicest conditions and hottest weather so far this year says, Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong. A Met Office map shows all of Scotland will be treated to 'warm or very warm' few days with maximum temperatures reaching 22 to 24C.

He said: "After a brief, less settled, interlude on Friday and Saturday, fine conditions will return by Sunday and into next week. For much of the UK this will be accompanied by a boost in temperatures with many places reaching the mid-20°Cs by the middle of next week.

"Some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching the values needed for heatwave conditions. Heatwave conditions need to remain in situ for three consecutive days, and by the middle of next week it is possible that some parts of the UK could be reaching heatwave thresholds.

"However, whether or not everyone experiences heatwave thresholds, the majority of the UK will experience the finest conditions and highest temperatures so far this year."

Before the spell of good weather, northwestern Scotland will be hit by wetter conditions on Friday and Saturday.
