Middlesbrough stance on Leeds United loanee emerges amid permanent transfer option

Middlesbrough have decided against signing Leeds United attacker Sam Greenwood on a permanent basis this summer. That is according to The Northern Echo as Boro plan to look elsewhere in their search for attacking reinforcements.

It is understood Middlesbrough agreed a £1.5m option to sign Greenwood when he moved to the Riverside on loan from the Whites last year. But The Northern Echo report states that Boro will not trigger the deal and are pursuing other targets.

Greenwood, who can operate anywhere across the front line, made a strong start to life on Teesside, scoring four goals in six games in a hugely impressive spell in October and November. But the 22-year-old struggled for form and to hold down a regular starting spot in 2024. He only contributed one assist in the second half of the season.

Greenwood did not start any of the last four games of the season. He made 26 starts across all competitions for Boro, scoring five goals.

He wrote on social media earlier this week: "A club full of great people! Staff, teammates and supporters thank you for this season. Full of ups & downs and I’ve loved every minute, time to rest up and recover."

United are well-stocked in the forward areas, with Daniel James, Wilfried Gnonto, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville having all starred in their promotion push. However, if Daniel Farke's team fail to win promotion, they could face a battle on their hands to keep hold of Gnonto and Summerville. The pair are thought to have a number of admirers in England and Europe.
