A popular Middlesbrough cafe has announced it is to close this weekend.

The Tea House in the town's Grange Road will serve its last cuppa at the weekend after service on Saturday, June 29, before before the shutters come down - possibly for good.

Friends Simin Miri and Haydeh Mannani took over the former The Olde Young Tea House five years ago after pioneering entrepreneur, Carli McNaught, decided it was time to move on to the next chapter.

The venue has always proved a hit having previously been named Middlesbrough's most popular independent business. But, now the pair think it is time for a rest.

Simin said they have had an offer which they have accepted on the sale of the business, but she has no idea if the new owners intend to keep it as a tea room or transform the premises into something else.

She said it is hard work running a business and the pair "just wanted to retire really".

On their Facebook page they said: "Almost five years since we took over Tea House Middlesbrough, it's with the heaviest of hearts we are announcing its closure.

"We have loved nothing more than serving you all the teas, cakes and lunches across the years, as well as seeing all your lovely faces. But after many a tasty cakes baked (and eaten), tea served, as well as two tired tea ladies we have come to the decision to sell the business.

"We want to thank you all for your support, we are going to miss you all and wish you all the best."

Sad customers have been leaving their messages of good luck to the pair. One said: "Nooooo…..the best Mediterranean veg and avocado sandwich around…please send me your secret recipe. All the best though ladies xx"

Another said: "Oh no, it's such a lovely place too and staff are so kind." With another adding: "So sorry to see you close. You always go that extra mile for your customers x"

Another customer said: "So sorry your closing we've always had a lovely experience when we've been for afternoon tea. We wish you both good luck in the next adventure you choose. xx"
