Moniaive Primary has scooped a prestigious award from UNICEF for years of hard work.

They received the Rights Respecting Gold Award and pupils and teachers celebrated by inviting families along for an afternoon of fun.

Principle teacher Elaine Watson, 54, said: “At the beginning of the project, lots of pupils were unaware of children’s rights and that’s been our job to take them on that journey to understand what they have and how to respect their own rights.

“Part of our journey was to partner up with a school in Uganda which has a very, very different way of educating their kids.

“For a start their classes are huge and have different age groups in the same class with very little resources to learn with.

“That was a huge learning experience for our children and we managed to do a video link with them and then raised money for them.

“One of our teachers’ husbands comes from Uganda and he was able to visit his family and presented a variety of things to the school such as stationery, basic items like pens, pencils and some books and paper.”

She added: “It is a huge award for the school to receive and I am very proud.”
