Motorist slapped with fine after being caught on motorway watching TV on mobile phone

This is the moment a motorist was caught by police driving along a motorway while watching TV on their mobile phone.

Officers were left shocked when they spotted the driver taking in a TV show on the phone which was mounted on the windscreen.

The 38-year-old, from Stoke-on-Trent, was pulled over on the M6 near Stafford by officers from Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, as well as getting a “telling off”, the driver was handed a £100 fine.

It’s not the first time a driver has been caught catching up on some TV viewing - last month an Uber driver was caught watching porn on his phone while parked on the hard shoulder of the M56.

The CMPG tweeted: "Lane one of the M6 at Stafford in the roadworks section is not an acceptable place to catch up on the TV! Driver reported. #fatal4 #cmpg."

Staffordshire Police shared the tweet, writing: "Not the greatest idea to catch up on the television whilst behind the wheel. A 38-year-old from Stoke given a telling off and £100 fine after being spotted this afternoon. #Fatal4."

The driver was caught on the stretch of the motorway that currently has 50mph speed restrictions in place.

It is not known which programme they were watching at the time they were caught.

It’s not just police who were shocked by the driver’s behaviour.

Julie Callaghan wrote: "The shocking part is that they are so blatant in doing it like it's just normal."

Linda Joyce Haycock added: "I can’t believe this! This is such a busy stretch of the motorway too with frequent accidents"

Wendy Michelle Pass wrote: "Unbelievable!! Surely a hefty fine and an outright ban is on the cards??"
