‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Renewed for Season 2 at Amazon

It’s official: Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be back on the case.

Amazon kicked off its inaugural meeting with Madison Avenue ad buyers Tuesday with a slew of announcements, including news that the action series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine has been renewed for a second season.

A reimagining of the 2005 feature that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Glover co-created the series with his Atlanta colleague Francesca Sloane, with the latter returning as showrunner for season two. It’s unclear if Glover and Erskine will return to star as Amazon has not formally confirmed any casting for the newly ordered season.

The series was originally poised to star Glover alongside Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the Star Wars duo also serving as co-creators. But, as Glover explained in a THR cover story, the friends disagreed on a larger concept for the reimagined Smith and agreed to part ways.

“I don’t think we ever felt comfortable enough with each other. And that’s OK. That’s what happens when you’re two captains,” Glover said in February after the series launched.

Critics have embraced Smith, with the comedic spy drama currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90 percent score. (Audiences were less favorable, giving the show a 67 percent rating.) In her review, THR TV critic Angie Han said the series “lack[ed] the romantic fizz” while praising the concept as “clever.”

The renewal marks a fitting cap to Smith’s road to the screen, which started in 2020 when the conversations about the project first began before it was formally announced in early 2021.

Signs that Amazon planned to renew the series first surfaced in April when news broke ahead of the submission deadline that Smith was going to compete for Emmys in the drama field, rather than the crowded limited series space.

The Smith renewal caps a busy morning at Amazon’s upfront presentation, which also included a series pickup for Nicolas Cage Marvel series Noir and a season five renewal for The Boys. Amazon also unveiled a slew of unscripted programming, with pickups for four new sports documentaries (focused on Dale Earnhard Sr.; the history of the Madden video game; an anthology about Game 7s; and a true crime entry about the Kansas City Chiefs superfan/serial bank robber). Additionally, the streamer renewed Coach Prime for a third season; picked up Pop Culture Jeopardy to series; and ordered the Shark Tank-themed series Buy It Now (hosted by JB Smoove); the holiday event Wish List Games (fronted by Nick Cannon).

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect casting for season two is unclear.
