A nurse from Bristol whose three daughters raised £85,000 for life-saving treatment in Germany has finally made her way back home after two months away. Mildred ‘Millie’ Olika was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer earlier this year but was told by doctors at the time that it was too late for chemotherapy to be productive in stopping the spread of the cancer, which had already spread from her lungs to her brain.

Despite the bleak outlook, daughters Stacey, Lydia and Emily weren’t ready to give up and found a treatment in Germany that could work. Armed with that knowledge the sisters managed to raise £85,000 in just four days, nearly £20,000 more than the treatment required, to get their mum to Germany and pay for the treatments.

Bristol Live covered the story back in April when the Go Fund Me was first set up and at the time daughter Stacey told us: “We've identified life-enhancing treatments offered in Germany that have shown promising results, potentially extending her prognosis by years and they can start as soon as possible. The full treatment costs €81,000 which is £69,390.02. Unfortunately, these treatments are not covered by the NHS and come with a hefty price tag.”

Two months on, Millie has made it back to the UK, news which was shared in a heart warming update on the Go Fund Me website. The post read: “Hi Everyone, we hope you’re well. We are thrilled to share some wonderful news with you: Mildred is back home!”

“After spending around two months in Germany with our father, receiving vital treatments, she is finally reunited with her family. This is a milestone in her journey and we couldn’t be more grateful for the progress she has made.”

But while Millie has received the advanced treatments in Germany, she still has some more recovering to do as well as more treatments here in the UK. In the update, daughter Stacey shared: “What’s next for Millie? The journey is not over yet. Mildred has more treatments to undergo here in the UK, starting this week. We ask that you continue to keep her in your prayers as she moves forward on this path to recovery.”

She also thanked everyone for their love and support throughout the terrifying journey her family has been through claiming the support and love has ‘been a source of strength’ for the family in ‘these challenging times’.
