Netherlands 3 Germany 0: Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum heap more misery on hapless visitors

Goals from Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum condemned Germany to a heavy Uefa Nations League defeat against Netherlands.

Van Dijk's header from team-mate Wijnaldum's corner gave them the lead after 29 minutes, before late goals from Memphis Depay and the Liverpool midfielder sealed an emphatic win for Ronald Koeman.

Timo Werner had the first sight of goal when put through by Thomas Muller but the youngster got his effort horribly wrong.

It then took a fine save from Jasper Cillessen to deny Muller when the towering striker sent his curling shot towards the top corner.

Germany had been on top in the opening half an hour but it was the Netherlands who took the lead with a goal made in Liverpool.

Wijnaldum delivered the corner and former Reds winger Ryan Babel rose with a firm header onto the bar. Manuel Neuer was caught off his line and van Dijk was there to head into an empty net.

It could have easily been 2-0 soon after had it not been for Matthias Ginter, who somehow intervened to stop Babel from tapping home Denzel Dumfries' excellent cross.

Joachim Low sent on Leroy Sane and Julian Draxler in the second half to inject some pace into his side and he made a bold decision in taking off Muller.

The Bayern Munich forward looked furious with the decision, snubbing his manager as he walked off the pitch, to highlight the low morale in the Germany camp.

Sane then had the best chance to level it, latching onto Joshua Kimmich's excellent pass but somehow spurned his effort.

Germany could and probably should have had a penalty when Ginter was tripped in the box by substitute Quincy Promes but referee Cuneyt Cakir waved away their claims.

Depay added a second on the counter with four minutes to go when he slotted underneath Neuer and could have got another minutes later but hammered a shot against the bar.

Wijnaldum made sure of the three points with a low drive into the corner in stoppage time to condemn Germany to their worst defeat since 2007.
