Newcastle transfers state of play: Olise hopes dented by hidden clause as Bayern monitor Trippier

Newcastle United's transfer window is officially open for business with one player already through the door and Eddie Howe hopeful of welcoming a second new face soon.

Centre-back Lloyd Kelly was unveiled as the club's first high profile new addition at St James' Park on Thursday before becoming a Toon player for real on July 1 when his contract begins. Burnley stopper James Trafford is the next star that Howe hopes to sign with negotiations under way with the Clarets for a cash deal.

Here's the latest take on the stories involving Newcastle in the summer window.

Michael Olise

The 21-year-old has a £60million clause in his contract that would sanction his exit from Crystal Palace. But, as reported in the Times, that clause can only be activated by clubs who have Champions League status leaving Newcastle in a tricky position.

With Bayern Munich expressing an interest plus Liverpool and Manchester City interested even Chelsea could be left disappointed. There is talk that Olise would be keen on joining the Blues after getting close to agreeing terms at Stamford Bridge 12 months ago.

Then Chelsea managed to activate a £35m clause but the deal fell through and Olise signed a new improved deal with Palace. That deal also saw his clause elevated to £60m and the Champions League wish sewn in.

Jarrad Branthwaite

The player Newcastle scouted during his Carlisle days looks set to leave Everton. The Magpies have taken a close look at Branthwaite in more recent times too with Steve Nickson watching the player last spring.

Now the centre-back looks set to join Manchester United as Everton make a hasty move to pacify FFP and avoid more point deductions. A £70m move to Old Trafford is on the cards for Branthwaite although Newcastle's interest was as good as over anyway.

The Magpies have already signed Lloyd Kelly and their limited budget is reserved for other areas of the pitch.

Bryan Mbeumo

The Brentford star has been linked with Newcastle already this summer but there is firm interest from Liverpool for the Cameroon international. The £35m-rated winger has accepted his time at Brentford is coming to an end but still has two years left on his current deal.

Mbeumo would certainly be an option for Newcastle if they don't get anywhere with a target like Olise. Mbeumo said to French journalists recently: "I have spent five years at Brentford, at a club that has allowed me to grow and pass a milestone but yes, I would like to play in the biggest competitions, at the best clubs."

Kieran Trippier

The England full-back was the subject of a bid from Bayern Munich last January but Newcastle fought off the interest. However, with Harry Kane looking for more English company next season and new Bayern boss Vincent Kompany a fan of Trippier, the deal may yet be resurrected.

As Trippier prepares to do battle in Germany in the European Championships he knows he will be playing right under the nose of Bayern's talent watchers. And at 33 the German giants still feel he has something to offer them in turn they can provide him with the lure of Champions League football again.

It's one to watch.

Yankuba Minteh

Talk that a clutch of European clubs expressing an interest in Minteh has now been stood up at the Newcastle end. The winger, who was at Feyenoord last season and impressed, was due to start pre-season training with the Magpies.

However, a fee of £40m has been set by United and those clubs interested have been invited to make their offers. One of those clubs thought to be keen is Borussia Dortmund.

After Edin Terzic quit the Champions League finalists yesterday it may take a few days for things to settle down. But Dortmund usually don't mess around once they have a target in mind.
