Newcastle United push for Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer as Everton eye return deal

Newcastle United are pushing ahead with their transfer interest in Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin but they need to sell someone before they buy while Yankuba Minteh could be moving in the opposite direction.

Calvert-Lewin, who was Everton’s top scorer with eight goals last season is one of only four players to have netted 50 or more times in the Premier League for the club. The 27-year-old only has one year left on his current contract but the ECHO understands that Goodison Park chiefs have offered him a new deal.

Despite Magpies manager Eddie Howe declaring publicly that he wants to keep Callum Wilson, a move for Calvert-Lewin could spell the end of the 32-year-old's four-year stint at St James’ Park. Calvert-Lewin's name is understood to has always featured prominently in recruitment meetings and Newcastle have been pushing hard to sign the player for the last few weeks.

The Blues ace is seen as the ideal complement, in terms of his physical attributes, to first-choice striker Alexander Isak and could even play with the Sweden international if needed because of his aerial prowess and hold-up play.

Although the two potential deals are not necessarily tied to each other, Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell is one of several interested parties keeping tabs on Newcastle United’s in-demand Gambian international teenager Yankuba Minteh.

The winger, who arrived on Tyneside from Danish outfit OB last summer has not yet played a first team game for the club but enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Dutch club Feyenoord last term, netting 11 times in 37 matches under Arne Slot who has just been appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool. Everton have just made 20-year-old Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam their first summer signing although Lewis Dobbin could yet move in the opposite direction.

Manager Sean Dyche is already short of options out wide and although the Blues are closing in on a loan return for Leeds United’s Jack Harrison, Arnaut Danjuma has returned to Villarreal after a disappointing spell on Merseyside.
