Angelina Jolie's A 'Beautiful' Director: Actor Garrett Hedlund Praises 'Unbroken' Team

Angelina Jolie, is of course known for her incredible looks. For goodness sake, in French her last name even means pretty. However, actor Garret Hedlund has now revealed that she is a “beautiful” director as well.

Not so bad looking himself, hunky actor Garrett Hedlund stars in Ang's second directorial offering, Unbroken. A film which focuses on the life of Olympic athlete and World War II veteran Louis Zamperini, who was taken as a prisoner of war by Japanese forces for more than two years.

Starring as Commander John Fitzgerald, Garrett's character acts as the leader of the prisoners within the camp where Zamperini is held.

Garrett was full of praise for Angelina Jolie (WENN)

Talking about his experience on set in an interview with Man of the World, the 29-year-old revealed he hadn't been intimidated by his famous director, but rather he enjoyed the amount of freedom she gave the cast to explore their characters.

Garrett shared: “No, but I had met her a few time before, through Brad [Pitt].

“She was great in terms of letting us develop whatever ideas we had about our characters. We’d pick out our own wardrobe, and she’d tell us, ‘You go into hair and make-up and come out the way you want.’ There was no, ‘Everyone else is clean-shaven, so we’re gonna put a mustache on you.’ It was a beautiful permission to have, to develop the character of John.”

He then added: “I can’t wait to see the movie because I can’t wait to meet him.”

Skins star Jack O'Connell plays the lead character Louis Zamperini (WENN)

British actor Jack O'Connell will be flying the flag for the UK as he plays the main character, Louis Zamperini in the film. To prepare for the role, Jack followed a strict diet which allowed him only 800 calories a day for three months.

In an interview with the Telegraph, he revealed: “There were times on that raft when I just didn't have the energy, so I was sneaking the odd biscuit. I just thought, 'I need something'.”

Given the intense nature of his extreme diet, it is unsurprising that this had an affect on Jack's health. He added: “I kind of blacked out once or twice. I am a production liability.”

However, it sounds like it was all worth it. The 23-year-old explained that portraying the WWII war hero made him grow up a lot.

“I feel like when I was last in England I didn't have this mature, level head on my shoulders. It made a f***ing man of me, that job,” he reflected.
