We suspect Matt Smith hasn't exactly had a problem attracting a female fanbase in his role as Doctor Who - but it's his on-screen antics that has left a veteran director of the show feeling less than impressed.

Waris Hussein directed the first few epsidoes of Doctor Who back in 1963, which starred William Hartnell as the first Doctor.

But he thinks the Time Lord is far too sexy these days and should have kept an air of mystery about him like his predecessors.

Matt Smith as Doctor Who and his new assistant Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, are "too sexy" according to a former director of the show (WENN)

"There is an element now, and I know we're living in a different era, of sexuality that has crept in," he said while appearing with other cast members of the show on Radio 4's The Reunion.

Hussein said there had been a "sea change" in the show and focused on new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman's character's romantic relationship with Matt Smith's Doctor.

He added: "The intriguing thing about the original person was that you never quite knew about him and there was a mystery and an unavailability about him. Now we've just had a recent rebirth and another girl has joined us, a companion, she actually snogged him."

Hussein believes the Doctor should be like Sherlock Holmes and be "unavailable", adding: "Why bring in this element when in fact you needn't have it there?"

David Tennant as the previous Doctor and his assistant Rose, played by Billie Piper, will feature in the special 50th anniversary episode (WENN)

He was joined by Peter Purves, who is probably best known as being a Blue Peter presenter from the late 60s, but was also one of Hartnell's companions, who agreed with him and added that the current storylines had become too complicated.

He said: "The original series was so simple. They were very straightforward, nice linear stories that one could follow."

Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and the occasion will be marked with a special 3D episode which will see Smith and Coleman joined by former stars including David Tennant (now there's a sexy Dcotor!) and Billie Piper, who played his assistant, as well as a special appearance by legendary British actor John Hurt.
