Lorde & Joan Jett Join Nirvana On Stage For Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction

Lorde and Joan Jett were among the singers who joined Nirvana on stage last night as they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, replacing late frontman Kurt Cobain.

Remaining Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear were inducted into the Hall of Fame at Brooklyn's Barclays Center yesterday evening by R.E.M. rocker Michael Stipe, but it was their performance afterwards which really moved the audience.

The band were joined on stage by New Zealand star Lorde who sang 'All Apologies' while Joan Jett, who was close friends with Cobain until his tragic death 20 years ago, covered Nirvana's iconic hit 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.'

Also taking the place of Cobain were Sonic Youth vocalist-bassist Kim Gordon who performed 'Aneurysm' and St. Vincent who sang 'Lithium.'

After her performance, Lorde said: "So honoured and happy i got to help celebrate nirvana's rock and roll hall of fame induction tonight. true f**king rock stars, all, forever."

"And man, joan, annie and kim give a healthy display of Coolest Women You Will Ever Meet Behaviour," she added.

Novoselic also said: "Thank you @joanjett @lordemusic @KimletGordon @st_vincent for joining @nirvana tonight.

"Nice words from @Courtney tonight."

Nirvana's emotional induction included a speech from Cobain's widow Courtney Love who said: “Tonight, he really would have appreciated,” and added that the couple's daughter Frances Bean “isn't here because she's sick.”

Even more touching was the tribute from Cobain's mother who fought back tears and of the late singer: “He would have been so proud. He'd say he wasn't, but he would be.”

In his speech, Stipe said of the band: “Nirvana captured lightning in a bottle. [They] us forward towards our individual and collective potential,” before thanking Cobain for offering an “outsider voice for the fags, the fat, the fed-up and the bullied.”

He added: “Kurt, I miss you.” Novoselic also thanked Cobain, who was 27 at the time of his death, for creating music “that means so much for so many people.”

Others who were inducted into the Hall included Kiss, The E Street Band, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt and Hall & Oates.
